MAP from TOP to BOTTOM

LOS ALMENDROS: Is known for excellent Cochinita Pibil (a specialty roast pork dish) and Yucatan cuisine. Try the Yucateco sampler of four typical main courses: chicken, poc chuc, sausage, and Escabeche (onions marinated in vinegar and sour-orange).

EL TAPATIO: Known for their delicious pozole. On Uxmal Ave. at Yaxchilan Ave.

LA PLACITA: Sister restaurant of the La Placita across the street from the Royal Sands Hotel.

LA PARRILLA: Known for its grilled meat, Sunday $9 buffet, very good food and reasonable prices. For the adventurous try “filete de res con huitlacoche”, it’s not on the menu anymore, but they’ll still make it. A great little ribeye finished at your table with a mushroom sauce made from huitlacoche (a black fungus that grows on ears of corn in the field). It’s reported to be awesome!  http://www.laparrilla.com.mx/la-parrilla-cancun_en.shtml

LABNA: Yucatan cuisine in a Maya theme. Try the poc chuc (grilled tender pork loin in a sour-orange sauce). The restaurant is built to look like a Mayan ruin.  http://www.cancunmenus.com/menu_gifs/menu_labna.html

CARRILLO’S: One of Cancun’s oldest restaurants. Very casual open-air dining room. Lobster and filet mignon combo $17.

ROSA MEXICANA: The quality of the Mexican food is reportedly equal to La Parrilla.

EMARA: Low priced Yucatan cuisine just outside Mercado 28. Great panuchos, salbutes, papadzules, and consistently tasty HOT salsa.

EL CEJAS: Fresh seafood, popular reasonably priced lunch spot. Open afternoons only.

FAVORITE SMALL “Hole in the Wall” Places on AVENUE YAXCHILAN:

LA TABERNA: Delicious food, 2 for 1’s, good bar, lots of locals, super tasty tacos, TV football

EL POBLANO: Delicious food, 2 for 1’s, GREAT POZOLE and tacos,

LOS ARCOS: Food, 2 for 1’s, good bar

TACOS ISRAEL: bar with cheap beer and tequila, known for larger very meaty tacos arabes (tradition from town of Puebla)

LA FAROLA: Food, 2 for 1’s, good Italian-style pizza and excellent arrachera steak

LA CABANA & EL ASADOR: tacos

NOT ON MAP:

EL GUERRO: most say, the best Cochinita is in this dive on Palenque Avenue. Ask a cabbie to take you.

TIZONZITOS on PLAZA LAS AVENIDAS. Favorite taco spot for many. They deliver?

CHECANDOLE a short walk from Market 28. Great fast food taco franchise.

SUSHI

YAMAMOTO’S is known as the best downtown, and by some as the best in Yucatan!!  Ave. Uxmal #31
